出自《宋史·后妃传上·序》，意为妻子能够帮助丈夫，使丈夫的事业、学业、品格方面都有了进展，增加丈夫在社会上的地位。现在常用于恭维人家有贤淑的妻子。
From the Preface to the Biography of Imperial Concubines in the Song History. It means that a wife can help her husband progress in his career, studies, and character, increasing his status in society. It is now commonly used to compliment someone for having a virtuous wife.
战国时齐景公的宰相晏婴，身材不高，但他很有才干，名声传播四方。他有一个车夫为他驾车，那个车夫身材很高大，家中有一个贤惠的妻子。
During the Warring States period, Yan Ying, the prime minister of the State of Qi, was not tall but very talented and famous far and wide. He had a charioteer who was very tall and had a virtuous wife at home.
有一次，晏婴坐车出门，车夫驾着马车经过自家门口时，他的妻子从门缝里偷偷地看到他驾车时得意的神情。等到晚上回到家里，妻子狠狠地责骂了车夫一顿，说道：“晏婴身长不满六尺，当了齐国的宰相，天下人都知道他的大名，但他一点也没有自满的情绪。你身长八尺，只当他的车夫，还整天得意洋洋，这就是你只能做些低贱的职务的原因啊！”
One day, as Yan Ying was leaving by chariot, his charioteer drove past his home. From a crack in the door, the charioteer’s wife secretly saw her husband’s proud expression as he drove. When he returned home that evening, his wife scolded him harshly, saying: “Yan Ying is less than six feet tall, yet he became the prime minister of Qi, known by all. But he is not arrogant at all. You are eight feet tall, but only his charioteer, yet you strut around proudly all day long. This is why you can only take such a lowly job!”
车夫此后不再骄傲自满了，总是谦虚和蔼地对待别人。晏婴发觉了他的变化，就问他原因。车夫就把妻子的一番话讲给晏婴了听。晏婴觉得他听劝能改，于是就推荐他当了大夫。
After that, the charioteer never felt arrogant again, and treated everyone with humility and kindness. Yan Ying noticed this change and asked about it. The charioteer then told him what his wife had said. Seeing that he could accept advice and change, Yan Ying recommended him to become an official.
