As If No One Else Exists

From the Records of the Historian’s biography of assassins, meaning to act completely uninhibited, as if others aren’t present, whether brazenly nonchalant or arrogantly oblivious.

During the Warring States period, Jing Ke traveled between feudal states advocating they unite against the powerful Qin. When he lobbied the King of Zhao, he was treated with disdain. Disappointed, he headed next to Yan to try his luck.

In Yan, Jing Ke befriended a musician named Gao Jianli who made a living selling dog meat. The two hit it off, often drinking wine together while discussing philosophy and ideals. One day, they were drinking publicly and, quite inebriated, began singing loudly. Gao played music while Jing Ke sang boisterously, laughing wildly at times, embracing sorrowfully the next – as if the two of them were the only ones in existence, utterly oblivious to everyone around them.

Later, Jing Ke assisted the Yan prince Dan in an unsuccessful assassination attempt on the Qin king, leading to Jing’s execution.
