After the First Qin Emperor conquered the six kingdoms and established the powerful unified Qin Dynasty, he frequently toured around the country to consolidate his rule.

Once when the Qin Emperor’s procession of carriages and attendants passed through the Jiangnan region on its way to Kuaiji and Zhejiang, crowds of commoners lined the roads to watch. Among them were the young Xiang Yu and his uncle Xiang Liang.

As the Emperor’s carriage went by, Xiang Yu remarked, “I could take his place sitting in that carriage.”

Xiang Liang was shocked, for what Xiang Yu said amounted to a capital crime punishable by wiping out nine generations of one’s family. He quickly covered Xiang Yu’s mouth with his hand and quietly admonished him not to speak recklessly. From then on, Xiang Liang held Xiang Yu in higher regard.
